Gilda is Sergio Vieira de Mello´s mother. As a diplomat´s wife and primary school teacher, she taught her son Sergio the principles by which he lived. Raising him with an acute awareness of the world´s complexities from a tender age (Gilda traveled to Argentina when Sergio was 20 days old), she instilled in him his love of languages and culture. Gilda does crossword puzzles and reads the newspaper every day. As herphysical strength becomes more fragile, she remains an inspiration to all of us.
