1996 Nobel Peace Prize co-Winner, and a founding father of the first new democracy of the millennium. In exile for 24 years, he returned to his country and was President of Timor-Leste, and UN Under-Secretary General. Previously he was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2006 and Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007.
