The president of the São Paulo Order, Marcos da Costa, together with the president of the OAB in Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Santacruz, and Belisário dos Santos Júnior, member of the International Commission of Jurists and of the Truth Commission of OAB SP, said: "We received in this Congress, great names in the history of human rights in Brazil and in other countries, and we pay a very fair tribute to the Brazilian who has achieved the most important position in the world in human rights", said Marcos da Costa. With a life history and career, Belisário dos Santos described Sergio Vieira de Mello's commitment to actions in the field. "These places were the stage of important moments of the human rights diplomatic action, having this UN diplomat as activist. The post of High Commissioner is only given to those deeply and intimately linked to the issue of human rights, not the theoretical defense, but the action in favor of human rights. This extremely fair tribute from OAB SP represents a commitment from Brazilian lawmakers", he said.
Rio de Janeiro´s Regional President, Felipe Santacruz, classified Sergio as a hero: "There is nothing stronger and more symbolic in the fight, than events like this. They are events that represent not only the celebration, the homage; the memory of the lives of heroes, receiving honors is much more than that. Sergio was a hero, representative of an era, of a post-war generational commitment, built with much sacrifice. These memories deserve to be cultivated. We are highlighting principles. Every effort made for equality, freedom of the press, democracy, must have in us, true militants, with serenity, expertise, content and generosity, with those who do not understand what they are saying, because the lack of understanding and education, is a weapon contrary to all the civilizing values affirmed here", he said.
Inspired, Carolina Larriera recalled moments of Sergio's career and his personal struggle for human rights: "This is a truly electrifying homage. I thank the OAB SP for keeping the spirit of human rights defenders alive. I am doing my part to keep alive the flame of Sergio, who was the best known Brazilian at the UN. Long before he became a High Commissioner, Sergio had been working with human rights for 30 years, going unnoticed and working in doubtful “paradises” like Mozambique, Sudan, Cambodia, Rwanda. He was an idealist, and I think he would have liked to be here, celebrating and receiving this homage, and knowing that we are gathered here, fighting for those values", she said.
